These quick and easy churros are eaten around the clock in Spain and are exported around the world. You’ll never believe how easy they are to make!
There are not many better ways to start the day by indulging in these long sticks of sugary dough, dipped in an indulgent chocolate sauce. However, you’ll also see the Spanish eating these late into the night, especially at fiesta time. With this easy churros recipe, you can make your own any time.
A Spanish tradition
Churros feature all over Spain (and beyond). In fact, they are something of a national institution. If you have been to Spain and sampled this delicacy, you will know exactly why they are such a popular sweet dish. If you haven’t, then you are in for a treat. They are a popular breakfast snack but you can eat them as a snack at any time of day.
The great churro mystery
The origins of churros are something of a mystery. One theory claims that they are an interpretation of a Chinese recipe original imported to the peninsula by the Portuguese. The Spanish dispute this and claim they were a dish created out of necessity by humble shepherds who roamed the wilderness tending to their flocks. Noticing the similarity in shape to the horns of the churra sheep, the shepherds gave them the name churros. This sounds like the most plausible origin to us.
How to serve this easy churros recipe
Once prepared, serve the dish with hot chocolate sauce or coffee. To make a chocolate sauce, just heat a litre of full-fat milk in a pan and add 400g of the best dark chocolate. Stir until melted and thick. Just be careful not to burn it. You can add a touch of sugar to sweeten and even infuse with a cinnamon stick.
There are many recipes but this is by far the simplest, and takes inspiration from a basic method in Madrid where churro-making is something of an art form.
